Financed, designed and built in 1919 by the local African American community, the Attucks Theatre was the focal point of Church Street in downtown Norfolk. This facility is on the National Register of Historic Structures. From 2001 through 2004, The Livas Group was commissioned by the Crispus Attucks Cultural Center and the Norfolk Housing & Redevelopment Authority to restore the 22,000 square foot addition. It consists of two reception rooms, warming kitchen, dressing rooms, rehearsal hall, storage room and machine room to provide heating, ventilation and cooling for the entire facility. This project received the Hampton Roads AIA Award for Historic Preservation.
